For the free body diagram shown in the figure, the four forces are applied in the $x$ and $y$ directions. What additional force must be applied and at what angle with the positive $x$-axis so that the net acceleration of the body is zero?
Answer: (A) $\sqrt2\ \text{N}, 45^\circ$
Net force: $F_x = 5 - 6 = -1\ \text{N}$, $F_y = 7 - 8 = -1\ \text{N}$.
The extra force must be $(1\ \text{N}, 1\ \text{N})$: magnitude $\sqrt2\ \text{N}$ at $45^\circ$ to the positive $x$-axis.
