What clearing NEET opens up
The courses, careers and rules that NEET UG leads to, plus strong options if you love biology but medicine isn't the only plan. Figures are for the 2026 admissions; check the official sites before you apply.
Why NEET is worth the effort
- The single gateway to medicine. Every MBBS, BDS and AYUSH seat in India, including AIIMS, JIPMER and AFMC, is filled through NEET UG. Veterinary and many nursing seats use it too.
- A government seat is life-changing. Fees in government medical colleges are a small fraction of private college fees, which can run to lakhs of rupees every year. A good rank is worth far more than it first looks.
- A career with real security and meaning. Doctors are needed in every town and country; you can work in hospitals, government service, the armed forces, research, public health or your own practice.
- Medicine is becoming high-tech. AI-assisted imaging and diagnosis, robotic surgery, telemedicine and genomics are growing fast, and doctors who understand them will lead these fields.
- Needed even to study medicine abroad. An Indian student must qualify NEET to get a foreign MBBS recognised in India.
NEET UG at a glance
| Conducted by | National Testing Agency (NTA), once a year, usually in May |
| Paper | 180 questions, all compulsory, 720 marks, 3 hours, pen and paper |
| Subjects | Physics 45, Chemistry 45, Botany 45, Zoology 45 questions |
| Marking | +4 for correct, −1 for wrong, 0 for unanswered |
| Counselling | MCC fills the 15% All India Quota, AIIMS, JIPMER and central and deemed universities; each state fills its 85% quota; AACCC handles AYUSH; VCI handles the veterinary all-India quota |
Physics often decides the rank. Most aspirants score well in Biology, so the gap between ranks is usually made in Physics and Chemistry. Even 5 to 10 more correct Physics questions can move you thousands of ranks.
Courses you can join through NEET
| Course | Duration | What it leads to |
|---|---|---|
| MBBS | 5.5 years (4.5 years study + 1 year internship) | Doctor; then MD/MS through NEET PG or INI-CET, or super-specialisation later |
| BDS | 5 years including internship | Dental surgeon; MDS specialisations such as orthodontics and oral surgery |
| AYUSH: BAMS, BUMS, BSMS, BHMS | 5.5 years including internship | Ayurveda, Unani, Siddha and Homoeopathy doctors; government AYUSH services; growing wellness sector |
| BVSc and AH (veterinary) | 5.5 years including internship | Veterinary doctor; animal health, dairy, wildlife, research, government veterinary services |
| B.Sc Nursing | 4 years | Nursing in India and abroad, where demand is high. The Military Nursing Service (women only, about 220 seats) selects on NEET score, followed by its own tests and interview |
The allied health courses (physiotherapy, optometry, medical lab technology, radiology and imaging technology) mostly admit on Class 12 marks or their own tests, so check your state's rules. They are a good option alongside NEET.
Science and research routes for biology students
If you love biology but are not set on being a doctor, these are excellent and often less crowded:
- IISERs (BS-MS): five-year research degrees in biology, chemistry, physics and more, through the IISER Aptitude Test (IAT). Biology students can apply.
- NISER and UM-DAE CEBS: integrated M.Sc through NEST, including biological sciences.
- Central universities such as Delhi University, through CUET UG: B.Sc in life sciences, biotechnology, biochemistry, microbiology and more.
- New-age fields: bioinformatics, computational biology, genomics and healthcare data science combine biology with computing and are among the fastest-growing areas of research and industry.
MBBS abroad: the rules to know
Many students who don't get an affordable seat in India look abroad. If you want to practise in India later, the National Medical Commission (NMC) rules are strict:
- You must qualify NEET UG. For admission abroad, the score is valid for 3 years.
- The course must be at least 54 months long, plus a 12-month internship at the same university, and taught in English throughout.
- After returning, you must pass the FMGE screening test and do a one-year internship in an NMC-approved hospital in India. NMC plans to replace FMGE with NExT, but as of 2026 no date has been fixed.
Before you pay any agent: confirm on the NMC website that the university and course meet these rules, and ask for the university's recent FMGE pass rates.
If the rank you want doesn't come
- Look beyond MBBS: BDS, AYUSH, veterinary and nursing are respected careers in their own right, and their cutoffs are lower.
- Research and science: the IAT, NEST and CUET routes above lead to strong careers in biology and biotechnology.
- Allied health and pharmacy: physiotherapy, B.Pharm, optometry and lab sciences, all in demand in India and abroad.
- A repeat year: it works when the gap is in one subject (very often Physics) and you change how you study. Look honestly at your mock test scores before deciding.
Where physics fits in
Physics is 45 of the 180 NEET questions, 180 of the 720 marks. NCERT is the base, but high scores need regular practice in solving numerical problems. Use the chapter-wise NEET questions with solutions, the formula sheets and timed tests to turn Physics into your scoring subject.
Frequently asked questions
How many MBBS seats are there in India?
NMC's 2026 seat matrix lists about 1.4 lakh MBBS seats in 836 medical colleges, nearly half of them in government colleges. There are also about 28,000 BDS seats.
Is qualifying NEET enough to get an MBBS seat?
No. In 2026, 11.21 lakh candidates qualified but there are only about 1.4 lakh MBBS seats. Qualifying makes you eligible for counselling; your rank decides the seat.
Is NEET needed for MBBS abroad?
Yes, if you want to practise in India. NMC requires Indian students to qualify NEET UG before studying MBBS abroad. The score is valid for 3 years for this purpose.
Which courses can I join with a NEET score besides MBBS?
BDS, BAMS, BUMS, BSMS, BHMS, BVSc and AH (veterinary), and B.Sc Nursing in many colleges, including the Military Nursing Service.
Can biology students do research instead of medicine?
Yes. IISERs (through the IAT), NISER and CEBS (through NEST), and central universities (through CUET) offer strong research-oriented degrees in biology and related sciences.
