What clearing JEE opens up
The colleges, new-age programmes and careers that JEE Main and JEE Advanced lead to, with the rules you need to know. Figures are for the 2026 admissions; check the official sites before you apply.
Why JEE is worth the effort
- One exam, most of India's best engineering seats. A single JoSAA counselling fills the IITs, NITs, IIITs and other government-funded institutes, so one good rank gives you choices across the whole country.
- Top quality at a government fee. IIT tuition is about ₹2 lakh a year and NIT tuition about ₹1.25 lakh a year. Families earning under ₹1 lakh a year pay no tuition, families earning ₹1 to 5 lakh pay one third, and SC, ST and PwD students pay no tuition. Hostel and mess are charged separately.
- The people around you. Classmates who cleared the same hard exam, faculty who do research, well-equipped labs, coding and robotics clubs, startup incubators and internship networks. This environment is a large part of the value.
- Doors beyond B.Tech. The same preparation leads to science research (IISc), architecture, space science (IIST), and officer entries in the Army and Navy.
- The preparation pays off later. The problem-solving you build for JEE is the same skill that GATE, CAT, placement tests, Olympiads and research all test.
JEE Main and JEE Advanced at a glance
| JEE Main (Paper 1, B.E./B.Tech) | JEE Advanced | |
|---|---|---|
| Conducted by | National Testing Agency (NTA) | One of the IITs, by rotation |
| When | Two sessions, January and April. Your better score counts. | Once a year, usually in May |
| Who can write | Anyone who passed or is writing Class 12 with Physics and Mathematics | Only the top 2.5 lakh in JEE Main (all categories); at most two attempts, in consecutive years |
| Paper | 75 questions, 300 marks, 3 hours; 25 per subject (20 MCQ + 5 numerical); +4 for correct, −1 for wrong | Two compulsory 3-hour papers; question types and marking change every year |
| Leads to | NITs, IIITs, GFTIs, many state and private colleges, Army and Navy B.Tech entries, and JEE Advanced eligibility | IITs, IISc BS, IIST, IIT B.Arch (with AAT) |
Do not ignore Class 12 marks. For a seat in an IIT, NIT, IIIT or GFTI through JoSAA you also need 75% in Class 12 (65% for SC/ST), or a place in the top 20 percentile of your board.
New-age B.Tech programmes you can choose
B.Tech is no longer only the classic branches. These newer programmes are now offered through JoSAA. Names and seat numbers change every year, so always check the JoSAA seat matrix for the current list.
| Field | What you learn | Examples (JEE Advanced or JEE Main) |
|---|---|---|
| Artificial Intelligence and Data Science | Machine learning, deep learning, statistics, programming, data systems | IIT Hyderabad started India's first B.Tech in AI in 2019. AI or AI and Data Science B.Techs are now offered at about 12 IITs, including IIT Madras, IIT Jodhpur and IIT Guwahati. Many NITs and IIITs offer CSE with AI and ML. |
| Microelectronics, VLSI and semiconductors | Chip design, semiconductor devices, fabrication, embedded hardware | IIT Mandi (Microelectronics and VLSI), NIT Delhi (VLSI Design and Technology), IIIT Pune (Microelectronics and VLSI Design) |
| Quantum science and engineering | Quantum computing, communication and sensing, and the hardware behind them | IIT Mandi, from 2026: among the first quantum B.Techs at an IIT |
| Engineering Physics | Physics plus engineering: optics, photonics, materials, devices; a strong base for research and deep-tech jobs | IIT Bombay, IIT Delhi, IIT Madras and several other IITs and NITs |
| Mathematics, statistics and computing | Algorithms, applied maths, statistics, finance and data | IIT Delhi (Mathematics and Computing), IIT Kanpur (BS in Statistics and Data Science), and Mathematics and Computing at many IITs and NITs |
| Data analytics in core branches | A classic branch plus AI and data tools | IIT Mandi (Chemical, and Agricultural, Engineering with Data Analytics, from 2026) |
A practical tip: a newer branch at a strong institute is not always better than a classic branch (Electrical, Mechanical, Chemical) where you have real interest. AI and data skills are being added to every branch, and you can also take electives and minors in them.
Beyond B.Tech: other doors JEE opens
Science and research
- IISc Bengaluru, BS (Research): a four-year research-oriented science degree. For 2026, admission was through JEE Advanced or the IISER Aptitude Test (IAT) only; JEE Main is no longer accepted.
- IISERs (BS-MS): since 2024, admission is only through the IAT, not JEE. If you like pure physics, plan to write the IAT alongside JEE.
- NISER Bhubaneswar and UM-DAE CEBS Mumbai: integrated M.Sc through NEST, another good exam for students who enjoy physics.
Space
- IIST Thiruvananthapuram (under the Department of Space) offers B.Tech in Aerospace Engineering and Electronics (Avionics) through JEE Advanced. You apply on IIST's own portal, not JoSAA. Graduates who meet the CGPA requirement (7.5 in recent years) can be considered for ISRO jobs, subject to vacancies.
Architecture and planning
- JEE Main Paper 2A (B.Arch) and 2B (B.Planning) for NITs, SPAs and other colleges. Private B.Arch colleges mostly use NATA.
- IIT B.Arch: clear JEE Advanced, then the Architecture Aptitude Test (AAT).
Defence, with an engineering degree
- Indian Navy 10+2 B.Tech Cadet Entry: shortlisting is on your JEE Main rank, followed by the SSB interview and medical tests. You study B.Tech at the Indian Naval Academy, Ezhimala, and join as an officer. You need 70% in PCM and 50% in English.
- Indian Army Technical Entry Scheme (TES): needs a JEE Main score and 60% in PCM, then the SSB interview, with engineering training as an officer cadet.
Abroad, through JEE
- IIT Delhi Abu Dhabi takes some JEE Advanced students through JoSAA. You study on an IIT campus in the UAE and get an IIT Delhi degree.
State and private colleges
- Several state counselling systems and many private universities admit on JEE Main scores, so a modest rank is still useful.
If the rank you want doesn't come
JEE is one route, not the only one. Many successful engineers and scientists came through these:
- State entrance exams: KCET, KEAM, MHT CET, AP and TS EAPCET, WBJEE and others fill good government colleges at much lower fees.
- Other national exams: BITSAT (BITS Pilani), and university tests such as VITEEE, COMEDK and MET.
- B.Sc first, IIT later: a B.Sc in Physics or Mathematics, then IIT JAM for an M.Sc at an IIT, or GATE for an M.Tech, PSU jobs and research.
- A repeat year: it works for students whose problem was time or one weak subject, and when they change how they study. Before deciding, look honestly at your mock test scores.
Where physics fits in
Physics is one third of JEE Main, and in JEE Advanced it is often the subject that separates ranks, because its questions test concepts rather than memory. Strong mechanics and electrodynamics also lead directly into AI hardware, VLSI, quantum and Engineering Physics. Use the chapter-wise question bank, the formula sheets and timed tests to build that base.
