A sportsman runs around a circular track of radius $r$ such that he traverses the path ABAB, where A and B are the ends of a diameter. The distance travelled and displacement, respectively, are:
Answer: (D) $3\pi r,\ 2r$
A to B, B to A and A to B are three half-circles, so the distance is $3\times\pi r = 3\pi r$.
He starts at A and ends at B, the opposite end of a diameter, so the displacement is $2r$.
