Q 11-04-133JEE MainJEE Main 2022 (25 Jun, Shift 1)Easy
A uniform chain of $6\ \text{m}$ length is placed on a table such that a part of its length is hanging over the edge of the table. The system is at rest. The coefficient of static friction between the chain and the surface of the table is $0.5$. The maximum length of the chain hanging from the table is ______ m.
Numerical value type. Enter your answer.
Answer: 2
Let $\lambda$ be the mass per length and $x$ the hanging length. At the limit, the weight of the hanging part equals the maximum friction on the part on the table:
$$\lambda xg = \mu\lambda(L - x)g\ \Rightarrow\ x = \frac{\mu L}{1+\mu} = \frac{0.5\times6}{1.5} = 2\ \text{m}$$
