Q 11-14-096JEE MainJEE Main 2020 (8 Jan, Shift 2)Easy
A transverse wave travels on a taut steel wire with a velocity of $v$ when tension in it is $2.06\times10^4$ N. When the tension is changed to $T$, the velocity changed to $\dfrac{v}{2}$. The value of $T$ is close to:
Answer: (B) $5.15\times10^3$ N
$v = \sqrt{T/\mu}$, so $T \propto v^2$. Halving the speed needs one quarter of the tension:
$$T = \frac{2.06\times10^4}{4} = 5.15\times10^3\ \text{N}$$
