Choose the correct statement for processes $A$ and $B$ shown in the figure.
Answer: (A) $PV^\gamma = k$ for process $B$ and $PV = k$ for process $A$.
On a $P$–$V$ graph an adiabatic curve is steeper than an isothermal curve through the same point (slopes $-\gamma P/V$ versus $-P/V$). So $B$ (steeper) is adiabatic, $PV^\gamma = k$, and $A$ is isothermal, $PV = k$.
