In the circuit shown below, the maximum Zener diode current will be ______ mA.

Answer: 9
The Zener holds the load at $60\ \text{V}$, so $I_L = \dfrac{60}{10\ \text{k}\Omega} = 6\ \text{mA}$.
The Zener current is largest at the largest input, $120\ \text{V}$: $I = \dfrac{120 - 60}{4\ \text{k}\Omega} = 15\ \text{mA}$.
$$I_Z = 15 - 6 = 9\ \text{mA}$$
