The diode, $R$ and the source are all in one series loop, so this is a half-wave rectifier.
The diode conducts only in the half cycles when current can flow through it from the source towards $B$. In those half cycles the current goes up through $R$ from $B$ to $A$, so $B$ is at a higher potential than $A$ and $V_{AB}$ is negative. In the other half cycles no current flows and $V_{AB} = 0$.
So $V_{AB}$ consists of negative half-waves separated by zero: graph (4).
