Three blocks $A$ ($5\ \text{kg}$), $B$ ($3\ \text{kg}$) and $C$ ($2\ \text{kg}$) lie in a line on a horizontal smooth surface. $A$ is tied to $B$ by a string with tension $T_1$ and $B$ is tied to $C$ by a string with tension $T_2$. Block $C$ is pulled by a force $F = 80\ \text{N}$ directed away from the others. The tensions $T_1$ and $T_2$ in the strings are respectively:
Answer: (A) $40\ \text{N},\ 64\ \text{N}$
$a = \dfrac{80}{5 + 3 + 2} = 8\ \text{m s}^{-2}$
$T_1$ pulls $A$ alone: $T_1 = 5\times8 = 40\ \text{N}$.
$T_2$ pulls $A$ and $B$: $T_2 = 8\times8 = 64\ \text{N}$.
