A wheel is rolling on a plane surface. The speed of a particle on the highest point of the rim is $8\ \text{m/s}$. The speed of the particle on the rim of the wheel at the same level as the centre of the wheel will be:
Answer: (A) $4\sqrt2\ \text{m/s}$
In pure rolling the contact point is momentarily at rest. The top is $2R$ from it, so $v_{\text{top}} = 2v = 8\ \text{m/s}$, i.e. the centre moves at $v = 4\ \text{m/s}$.
A rim point level with the centre is $\sqrt2R$ from the contact point:
$$v_P = \omega\sqrt2R = \sqrt2v = 4\sqrt2\ \text{m/s}$$
