A $400\ \text{g}$ solid cube having an edge of length $10\ \text{cm}$ floats in water. How much volume of the cube is outside the water? (Given: density of water $= 1000\ \text{kg m}^{-3}$)
Answer: (B) $600\ \text{cm}^3$
Floating: weight = weight of water displaced, so the submerged volume holds $400\ \text{g}$ of water, i.e. $400\ \text{cm}^3$.
Total volume $= 10^3 = 1000\ \text{cm}^3$, so the volume outside $= 1000 - 400 = 600\ \text{cm}^3$.
