Assuming the earth to be a sphere of uniform mass density, a body weighs $300\ \text{N}$ on the surface of the earth. How much would it weigh at a depth of $R/4$ below the surface of the earth?
Answer: (D) $225\ \text{N}$
$g_d = g\left(1 - \dfrac dR\right) = \dfrac34g$, so the weight is $\dfrac34\times300 = 225\ \text{N}$.
