Given below are two statements: one is labelled as Assertion (A) and the other is labelled as Reason (R).
Assertion (A): Work done by electric field on moving a positive charge on an equipotential surface is always zero.
Reason (R): Electric lines of forces are always perpendicular to equipotential surfaces.
In the light of the above statements, choose the most appropriate answer from the options given below:
Answer: (D) Both (A) and (R) are correct and (R) is the correct explanation of (A)
The field lines are perpendicular to an equipotential surface, so the electric force on the charge is perpendicular to every displacement along the surface and does no work ($W = q\Delta V = 0$).
Both are correct and (R) explains (A).
