Two capacitors $C_1$ and $C_2$ are connected in parallel to a battery. The charge-time graph is shown below for the two capacitors. The energies stored in them are $U_1$ and $U_2$, respectively. Which of the given statements is true?
Answer: (D) $C_2 > C_1,\ U_2 > U_1$
In parallel both capacitors end up at the same battery voltage $V$. The final (saturation) charge is $Q = CV$, so the capacitor with the larger final charge has the larger capacitance.
From the graph, $C_2$'s curve levels off at a higher charge, so $Q_2 > Q_1$ and $C_2 > C_1$.
Energy $U = \tfrac{1}{2}QV$ with the same $V$, so $U_2 > U_1$.
