What is the lateral shift of a ray refracted through a parallel-sided glass slab of thickness $h$ in terms of the angle of incidence $i$ and angle of refraction $r$, if the glass slab is placed in air medium?
Answer: (B) $\dfrac{h\sin(i-r)}{\cos r}$
Inside the slab the ray travels a distance $\dfrac{h}{\cos r}$ (along its refracted direction).
The emergent ray is parallel to the incident ray; the perpendicular distance between them is this path length times the sine of the angle between the refracted ray and the original direction, $(i - r)$:
$$d = \frac{h}{\cos r}\sin(i-r) = \frac{h\sin(i-r)}{\cos r}$$
